December 2004

A little quicker with the update this time...

We had a great Thanksgiving with Blair and Darlene here for a few days. We cooked a 20lb turkey and had friends over to celebrate...a lot was eaten by all! After 4 short days our company was gone and we're back to the old routine again. First thing on the list is to get Emily's "big girl" room ready for her. She'll be moving into that when we get back from our trip in January!

Janelle had a 6 month appointment today and had her glucose testing done to make sure she doesn't have gestational diabetes. Her belly is growing and certainly looks pregnant now! Will she fit into her bathing suit in January when we head to Mexico? Could be interesting! We're busy planning our trip to Canada leaving on the 22nd and we'll update you next after we get back! Merry Christmas everyone!

November 2004

It's been quite a while; sorry for the delay. I've tried to keep it short and sweet below.

The biggest news of the month/year...on July 26th we found out that Janelle is pregnant again and is expecting on April 5th! We're very excited!

July was an interesting month for us. Janelle was about ready to throw out the road bike after Ehren decided to take a face plant off of it onto the asphalt! His story is here (pictures and all). In a nutshell he ended up with about a dozen or so stitches between his lip and chin, 6 new teeth and a root canal. He was finally fixed by the end of September. We won't be doing that again now will we? On a better note though, we did take a short family trip to Boulder, CO the beginning of July. Ehren had to go for business so Emily and Janelle decided to tag along to see the terrain. It was short but sweet and we'd love to go back!

Elaine came to visit in August for just over two weeks. It was nice to have a seasoned traveler back and to relieve Mom and Dad of parenting duties for 4 days. On the 13th we went to Maui for 4 days while Emily stayed behind with Gramma. Everyone did great but we (except Gramma) were all glad to be back! It was great to be able to get away for a bit and remember what the "boring life" was all about! :-)

September was a month of travel for us. Ehren had another business trip to Boulder, and at the same time Janelle and Emily decided to take a trip to High River for a week. We actually got to fly as far as Denver on the same flight which was quite a treat! Ehren's trip to Boulder sure helped the time pass while the rest of his family was in Canada!

September 7th we had our first ultrasound and got our first pictures of Baby van Melle.

In October we decided to drive to Las Vegas for Ehren's hockey tournament for 5 days. We had a great time and once again stayed at the Luxor Hotel. The team did great but lost in the semi-finals. It was great hockey to watch this time around and a lot of fun was had by all. We also decided to take a day trip to Big Bear on the 23rd. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive north east of San Diego and we went to visit some friends that were up there for the weekend. Little did we know that it was about a 9000ft. climb in the car...much higher than expected! Ehren took his mountain bike since the ski slopes are open to bike down in the summer and fall. Emily and Janelle took the chairlift ride up, had lunch with Ehren, and then the guys biked down. It was quite cold up there, in fact, the next weekend the hill was closed as they had 2 ft of snow!

The news of the month can literally be seen on our Baby #2 update page...meaning fetal pictures! We had our 20 week ultrasound on November 16th and once again heard the heartbeat. Things look good and we appear to have a "big" baby...possibly a boy? We won't be finding that out so you'll all have to wait until the Birth Day!

June 2004

Well, we made it through all of our company and it sure was fun.

Blair & Darlene, again. Just kidding, it is always great to have them visit, as we get a lot of help around the house, in the kitchen and outside with some projects. Abuse? Yeah, maybe. This year they modified their accomodations slightly by staying up in Hemet most of the time so they could hang out with some old friends from Shellbrook. We paid them a visit in Hemet too, staying over for a night and relaxing in the warm spring air.

Emily had her first birthday on March 13, of course. We celebrated with a house full of people and an afternoon bbq. Thanks to everyone who made it - we had a great time. The afternoon was capped off with the breaking of the piƱata which Blair & Darlene brought up from Puerto Vallarta. Congrats to Nolan & Callum for beating the crap out of the clay pot!

Reid made it down to visit for a couple weeks in March. He arrived on Emily's birthday, March 13, and left on March 27. Much biking was had by all. Ok, not really, just Reid. He must have gotten a few hundred kms in during the first week he was here, including an epic ride from our place to the top of Mount Palomar and back. Ehren was lucky enough to get out for 2 rides with Reid while he was here, which was a lot of fun. (yeah, you all missed out) During the 2nd week of Reid's visit, his buddy Shane came down to hang out also. They spent a couple days partying in LA and checking out the sites, then did some site seeing here also. It was great to meet Shane and we look forward to seeing him again. Thanks for the home-grown maple syrup, Shane!

Reid was in town again for a few days for work during the time Joop & Rose were here, but he managed to get a couple bike rides in too. It was nice to see him again and even better when the trip is paid for! Good thing QUALCOMM uses Synopsis tools...

Joop & Rose finally made it back down for the first time in almost 5 years. It was almost a 2 week stay, but they also got to enjoy their drive down and back. While they were here, they did a few days of baby-sitting Emily while we were working and just relaxed the rest of the time. Well, there was that day when Joop got sick in the glider out at Warner Springs, but other then that it was good. Actually, that was a fun day too, as we had a nice drive and also stopped to see the observatory on top of Mount Palomar.

We finally made a trip of our own again. On May 13 we left for Omaha, via Denver. The main focus of the trip was to attend Deana's graduation, but we had also been looking forward to visiting them and staying at their house since they bought it. Blair & Darlene were also there and Lana also dropped in from jolly old England. It was a short trip, as we came back on the 18th, but it was a nice break. Emily had the most fun with Butters, D&J's 1.5 year old yellow lab.

March 2004

Well, it's sure been busy in 2004. Please read the updates below to get the details (in reverse chronological order, as usual).

Nathan was our first visitor of the winter season, getting here on Dec. 23 and staying into the new year, Jan. 3. We had a great time while he was here, including a quick, one-day road trip to Las Vegas and a shorter day trip to Julian and up Palomar Mountain, both by Ehren & Nathan. We also made a trip to the zoo and to "candy cane lane" to see the Xmas lights. We spent a quiet New Years Eve at home with Brendon, Janice, and little Nathan joining us for filet mignon and lobster dinner and Remi joining later in the evening. Ehren also got some foosball lessons from Saskatchewan greatest!

January brought us Deana, in from Omaha to do a 4 week stint in the pharmacy at the Cancer Center in La Mesa (where Janelle works) as part of finishing up her Pharm.D. course. While most of her time here was spent working, she did find some time to do some shopping and visit the zoo. She was also kind enough to do some baby-sitting while she was here so we were able to go out for supper and see a movie at the theatre - what a night!

The family Brits, Lana & Samuel, joined us for a week in mid Jan. for Emily's baptism (see above). It's always fun to have the two of them around and we know we will be in for some good eating for at least one night. While here, we took them to Carlsbad for a bit of shopping and did some other minor site-seeing. Most of the time was spent with Emily - she certainly wasn't lonely.

Grandpa Blair & Grandma Darlene hoped a bird from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to attend Emily's baptism also. The house was really filling up at this point, so it was mostly just a job of getting everyone fed and washed. They also spent a day baby-sitting Emily while Janelle was working! Not much else too exciting that we can recall, but they'll be back soon!

Deana's hubby Jay arrived for Emily's baptism weekend also. It was great that he could manage to get the time off work to take part in the ceremony (Deana & Jay are Emily's god-parents). Time was short, but everyone always enjoys hanging out with the Nebraskan!

Uncle Ron & Auntie Ev made a quick trip down from Hemit (they were spending a few weeks vacation there, out of the Saskatchewan cold). We are extremely happy that some more family could attend Emily's baptism, but somehow in the whirlwind we missed getting a photo taken with them. :-( Anyway, it was nice to see them for the weekend.

Emily's baptism was on Jan. 17, 2004, at the St. Gregory the Great parish just off of Scripps Poway Parkway. Deacon Ron Diem conducted the ceremony. In attendance were Deana & Jay (god-parents), Lana & Samuel, Blair & Darlene, Ron & Ev, Jackie Regier, Brendon & Janice & Nathan Johnson, Herbert & Isabelle Vanhove, and Russell Zirnhelt. It was a beautiful day and a wonderful baptism. Emily held it together pretty well and didn't get too excited about the water being poured over her head. After the ceremony and some pictures, we all went out for lunch at Souplantation in Mira Mesa. Congratulations Emily!!!

Ehren played in the annual PUH2000 President's Day hockey tourney again this year. Much of the team was the same as our championship team from last year, but things just didn't click. The Rockin' Baja Lobsters were out after 3 games, but I think everyone had a good time.

Grandma Elaine was here to visit Emily (and us) from Feb. 6-21. While here, she got to see a few games of hockey, did lots of baby-sitting (yeah, we got to go out for a Valentine's Day dinner), and also got to see a bit more of the city. We also made another trip to Julian to enjoy another great slice of pie. She also gave us 3 more beautiful paintings, which we have already put up in our house!! And as a bonus, the weather finally cooperated with her visit!

Blain and Grace just left today after a 9 day stay. They did some touristy things here, like Sea World, Balboa Park, and the SD Trolley Tours, and also hit the road for a night in Las Vegas. They also spent a lot of quality time helping with Emily and she was excited to play with them every day. On their last day here, Ehren also joined them for a quick trip out to Borrego Springs and back through Julian (including a stop for pie).
